Four more dead humans connected to Demonbreun Enterprises had been found. A married couple, Paul and Tammy Hoebark, in Hermitage, were found in their bed at home. The man worked as a teacher at one of the local high schools, but his wife managed a craft brewery owned by us.
The other two hit close to home. Two of our human staff members from the tower had been found murdered in an alley just two blocks away. They had been on their way home from work when they stopped in the alley to have sex. From what I understood from Stanley, the two werenât a couple, but the woman often turned tricks for money.
âThis has got to stop!â I exclaimed.
âWe are doing everything we can,â Stanley replied.
I slammed my hands down on the desk in the makeshift office that I rarely visited. âItâs not good enough! The cops are breathing down my throat. Itâs even been mentioned that Iâm doing it. That Iâm the one out there killing people even though I have solid alibis. This is someone inside this building that knew that Cora Fletcher was turning tricks on her way home from work. They knew she was hooking up with Joseph. Find them,â I snarled.
Stanley nodded and left the room.
I slumped back into my chair. The sweet scent of flowers with a hint of citrus wafted toward me. Olivia was still living in the tower. Weâd taken her to her apartment where she had very little to her name. The efficiency made my old apartment look like a mansion. She packed a bag, and I swore there was nothing left in the room worth taking. I also swore that she would never spend the night in that shithole ever again. She avoided me. We talked, and she had typical, curious questions about vampires.
Iâd even stepped into sunlight so she could see that I didnât sparkle. I did however melt, and I regretted it. But Iâd do anything to regain her trust.
Danny sat silently across the room. I knew he could smell her, too. Iâd seen him watching her. If I was a betting man, Iâd say if Olivia wasnât firmly established as mine, he would be all over her.
âWhatâs all the yelling?â she asked as she breezed into the door. Danny straightened. âHey, Danny.â
âGood evening, Miss Spencer,â he replied.
âI wish you would call me Livy.â
âI call you what my boss tells me to call you,â he replied.
âMalik, tell him to call me Livy.â
âCall her Livy,â I said.
He huffed. Heâd also lied through his teeth. Iâd never told him to call her that. Bastard.
âItâs nice to see youâve figured out how things work around here,â Danny teased her.
âMalik is in charge. Lord Demonbreun of the Vampires. I canât believe I just fucking said that,â Livy said.
My eyes shot to her. Iâd never heard her cuss. Much less drop the f-bomb. I didnât know if I wanted that word to never cross her sweet lips again or if I wanted to hear her shout it at the top of her lungs.
